Carole Richard Thompson will Read Wednesday at Coffee with the Poets

 Coffee with the Poets and Writers meets Wednesday, October 12, 10:30 a.m. at Café Touché in Hayesville, NC. Featured this month is poet and writer, Carole Richard Thompson.
Twenty-one years ago Carole and her husband moved to Blairsville, in the North Georgia mountains. After many years as a portrait painter, she began to study writing, and joined the North Carolina Writers' Network. She credits her love for writing to her friend and mentor, Nancy Simpson, whose classes in creative writing and poetry have been her greatest source of inspiration.

Her first short story, "A Bag of Sugar for Paula," was published in The Liquorian Magazine, and also the anthology, Christmas Presence, published by Catawba Press. Her story, "The Uniform" appeared in the anthology, Clotheslines, published by Catawba Press.

Carole's poems have been anthologized in A Sense of Place, published by Southeast Writers Association, Echoes across the Blue Ridge, published by Winding Path Publishing and Women's Places, Women's Spaces by Stone Ivy Press. Poems, "The Party's Over," and "36 Hours" were published in Wild Goose Poetry Review.

The public is invited to come and meet Carole, and read their original poems or short prose at open mike.

Café Touche, 82 Main Street, serves the best coffee in town and no one wants to leave without having a delicious muffin.

COFFEE WITH THE POETS IN HAYESVILLE ON NOV. 10, 2010














NC WRITERS NETWORK WEST's featured poets today at Coffee With the Poets at Phillips at Lloyd Book Store were Maren O. Mitchell of Hiawassee  - Young Harris, Georgia and Linda M. Smith of Hayesville, North Carolina.These are popular poets with many publications to their credit.  

Glenda Beall, founder of Coffee With the Poets during the time she was Netwest's Porgram Coordinator, led the program.



During the Open Mic session, a number of Netwest members read poems, including Nancy Simpson who read from her newly published book  LIVING ABOVE TH FROST LINE: New and Selected Poems ( Carolina Wren Press.)  On this, the anniversary of her mother's death, Simpson read the poem, "Argument With My Mother."

















Brenda Kay Ledford read a recently published essay written by her mother, Blanche Ledford that was published in a new anthology of poetry and prose TRAVELING TIME  (Old Mountain Press.)


Joan Howard read a vivid autumn poem. A number of other Netwest poet's read in the open mic session including Clarence Newton, Glenda Barrett, and long time member Carolyn Johnson.


WHAT IS NEXT?  Some of these writers: Glenda Beall, Linda Smith, Brenda Kay Ledford, Blanche Ledford, Maren O Mitchell,  and Nancy Simpson will be featured  in a panel discussion  WRITERS TALKING ABOUT WRITING at Moss Memorial Library in Hayesville 2:00 on Saturday, November 20, 2010.  It is said that they will share some of their writing tips and breakthrough moments in their own writing. The program is free and open to the the public.  All netwest members within driving distance are welcome to come and join in the discussion.

Coffee with the Poets in Hayesville

Wednesday was Coffee with the Poets day in Hayesville at Phillips and Lloyd bookstore on the square. We had a wonderful turnout for Karen Holmes' reading. As usual she gave a stellar performance with a combination of touching and humorous poetry. Karen plans to hold a class at Writers Circle in the late fall or next spring on How to Present Your Writing Before an Audience. She has been getting lots of practice reading her poetry in Atlanta and in Asheville and Hickory, NC recently. Karen facilitates the Writers Night Out program held on the second Friday of each month in Towns County, Georgia.
Among the open mic readers this time at CWP were Carole Thompson, Netwest Rep for Georgia, Brenda Kay Ledford, Glenda Barrett, Paul Donovan, Barbara Groce, Clarence Newton, Maren Mitchell, Linda Smith, Glenda Beall and Lorraine Newton. We were pleased to have a visitor, Bob Grove from Murphy read a short piece on Charles Dickens.
Several visitors came just to listen. Glenda Beall was back as the moderator for the event.
